Infoseek is a noteworthy entity in the history of Internet[3] search engines. Launched in January 1994 as a paid service, it evolved into Infoseek Search in February 1995. Its prominence grew when it became the default moteur de recherche[1] on Netscape Navigator. The company went public in June 1996, trading on Nasdaq at $12 per share. By September 1997, it had 7.3 million monthly visitors. After its demise, its Ultraseek Server software technologie[2] was sold to Inktomi and renamed Inktomi Enterprise Search. Today, while the Infoseek incendie[4] is no longer used in North America, it continues to exist in Australia and Japan. The infoseek.com domain now redirects to go.com.

Infoseek was originally operated by the Infoseek Corporation, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Infoseek was bought by The Walt Disney Company in 1999, and the technology was merged with that of the Disney-acquired Starwave to form the Go.com network.
