Facebook[4] Slingshot is a mobile application that was developed as a competitor to Snapchat[5]. Launched by Facebook, this application reimagines the concept of instant messaging[1] by requiring an action, specifically a reply, to unlock and view incoming messages. This novel approach was designed to encourage interactivity[2] amongst users. Although compared to Snapchat due to its ephemeral nature of content, Slingshot attempted to carve its own identity, presenting itself as more than just a clone of the popular social media[3] platform. However, Facebook Slingshot was shuttered along with other applications from Facebook’s Creative Labs. Despite its closure, Slingshot played a significant role in the evolution of social media platforms, pushing boundaries and testing new concepts in digital communication.
Facebook Slingshot was an instant messaging software application for sharing photos and videos with friends, designed by Facebook. The app was launched on June 18, 2014, for Android and iOS devices. The app was discontinued and removed from the app store and Google Play store in December 2015, after Facebook shut down its "Creative Labs" division.
