Discord is an all-purpose communication platform initially created by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy for the gaming community. Launched in 2015, it offers a range of features including instant messaging[1], voice and video calls, text messaging, and media sharing. Users can communicate in private chats or in servers, which include chat rooms and voice channels. The platform, available on different operating systems and web browsers, has seen a steady growth in its user base, reaching 150 million monthly active users[2] by 2024. The platform has expanded beyond gaming, evolving into a comprehensive chat client for diverse topics. Funded by entities like YouWeb’s 9+ incubator, Benchmark Capital, and Tencent[4], Discord has also partnered with WarnerMedia for investment and Microsoft[3] to support Xbox Live users.

Terms definitions
1. instant messaging. Instant Messaging (IM) is a digital communication method that enables real-time transmission of text-based messages over internet or computer networks. Unlike email, IM facilitates immediate, interactive conversation, often enhanced with emojis, file transfers, voice-over IP, and video chat. IM systems can function independently or as part of a larger social media platform. They have evolved significantly since early systems like Talkomatic and CompuServe CB Simulator, developing into graphical user interfaces with a wide range of features. Today's popular services, including Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, offer private and group messaging, advanced security measures such as end-to-end encryption, and integration with social networks. They play a vital role in both personal communication and business environments, facilitating effective real-time communication with conversation records for future reference.
2. active users. "Active Users" is a term that refers to individuals who engage with an online platform or application during a specific time period. This term is pivotal in various sectors including business, academia, and research. In business, metrics related to active users aid in predicting growth trends, customer engagement, and potential revenue streams. In academia and research, studying active user behavior contributes to the understanding of online behavioral patterns. Ethical considerations around active users shed light on the importance of informed consent, data privacy, and confidentiality in the online realm. There are also technical challenges in defining and accurately measuring active users due to varying practices across different companies. Additionally, active user data plays a crucial role in predictive analytics and policy considerations regarding technology use and online safety.
